Domestic and industrial waste - a definition of terms

Waste is a collective term for valueless rubbish. In recycling, one makes the distinction between domestic and industrial waste.

Domestic waste is, in many countries, the leftover waste from valuable substances such as paper, plastic, glass, clothes, and shoes, which have already been separated out before being collected. The leftover waste is, however, again sorted to prepare it for use in heating.

The organic waste, the mineral and metallic components, are separated out and the lightweight combustible portion is made ready. Depending on the usage, the coarser portion could be for heat and power stations or the finer portion for injection burner systems. Industrial waste tends to be well-defined in the size of the fragments and the composition, consisting of plastic, rubber, textiles, wood etc. The calorific value of this waste is already determined by the crane operator who brings the waste to the recycling plant and selects the respective product mixture. Here too, the heavy and light portions are separated out, and mineral and metal products removed from the stream of material. Various separation stages are run through, depending on what quality of substitute fuel is to be produced.

The better the control one has over the composition and quality of combustion / calorific value for the fuel, the greater is the reclaimed value. Here again, the homogeneity of the fuel granulate is of crucial importance for its quality.
